Did You Know About These Top 10 Dog Breeds in America

The American Kennel Club (AKC) has recognised the Labrador Retriever as the most popular dog breed in the country for thirty years running.

Dog Breeds in America: The top dog breeds from previous years’ lists remain the same, but two notable changes occurred in the most recent list: the fun-loving Dachshund broke into the top 10, replacing the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, and German Shepherds lost ground to French Bulldogs for the second position.

The AKC has released its most recent list of the top 10 dog breeds, which is provided below. Did your favorite make the cut?

1. Labrador Retriever

For the thirty-first time in a row, the Lab is the top breed. Furthermore, why not? A favourite in American homes, this breed is smart, gregarious, and energetic. Their gentle nature and eagerness to please make them excellent search and rescue and guide dogs.

Fun Fact: The Led Zeppelin song “Black Dog” was named after a Lab that was found wandering around the band’s recording studio, according to Mental Floss.

2. French Bulldog

The happy, smiling face of the French Bulldog is all you need to look at to realise why this breed has become so popular in recent years! French Bulldogs make excellent apartment dogs because of their varied personalities; sometimes they like to run and play, and other times they just want to lounge around and be loved. This is not a breed to be left alone for extended periods of time as they require human interaction and attention to thrive.

3. German Shepherd

A true dog lover’s pet, the German Shepherd is intelligent and hardworking. This breed enjoys participating in outdoor activities for dogs and needs lots of mental & physical stimulation to remain at peak performance. With a poised and courageous demeanor, it’s no wonder German Shepherds are often trained to assist the police, the military, and other service organizations.  

4. Golden Retriever

Ah, the classic Golden Retriever! Another wonderful family pet with an amazing temperament is the Golden Retriever, a very athletic and highly trainable dog breed. Families with small children would benefit greatly from them because they enjoy playing and running around. Due to their exceptional work ethic, Goldens make great guide dogs, search and rescue dogs, and hunting partners.

5. Bulldog

The Bulldog is very affectionate and has a wrinkled face. Comparatively speaking to the other most popular dog breeds on this list, they are incredibly calm and make wonderful friends. Adaptable and docile, Bulldogs do not need a ton of exercise; these laidback dogs prefer to stay home and relax with their pet parents most of the time. 

6. Poodle

Poodles are known for making regular appearances in dog shows. Their elegant form never goes unnoticed, but their personalities are just as charming as their looks. While sometimes reserved, puppy socialization can help this breed become quite confident. They’re smart, easy to train, eager to please, and lots of fun to be around. Plus, Poodles come in three different varieties—Toy, Miniature, and Standard—and are known to adapt well to different lifestyles.

7. Beagle : Dog Breeds in America

A smooth-coated dog breed that is peaceful and happy, the Beagle is conveniently sized and has short, low-maintenance coats. They do need exercise, so having a fenced-in garden is perfect for them. These hounds are a curious hunting breed that like to explore and use their noses a lot.

Fun Fact: According to Embrace Pet Insurance, beagles are easier to spot and follow through the woods because of their white-tipped tails.

8. Rottweiler

Because of their size and strength, Rottweilers are occasionally misinterpreted. However, they are actually one of the most intelligent dog breeds—easy to train and willing to work. Their broad chests and muscular bodies stand out, but Rottweilers have even bigger hearts and make for devoted companions. 

Fun Fact: According to Rottweiler Hub, in the 19th century, Rottweilers were all but forgotten as trains took over the role of bringing cattle to markets.

9. German Shorthaired Pointer

One of the best active dogs for active families, the German Shorthaired Pointer is an enthusiastic outdoor-loving breed that needs plenty of exercise. When it comes to dog sports and competition, they are regarded as masters of all trades. German Shorthaired Pointers are amiable, affectionate, and people-pleasers with a distinguished appearance that frequently includes spots or “ticking.”

Fun Fact: Every German Shorthaired Pointer puppy is born white with patches of liver colour. According to Hound Games, as they get older, their coat may fill in with different shades of liver ticking or they may become a solid liver colour.

10. Dachshund

Among the United States’ top 10 dog breeds for the first time, Dachshunds are vivacious dogs known for their long bodies, short legs, and bold character! Lovingly referred to as wiener dogs, this comically shaped, social breed is inquisitive about everything and enjoys taking relaxed walks. Dachshunds also have a keen sense of smell that can distract them during training; patience, persistence, and positive reinforcement are key! 

Fun Fact: It is believed that the first hot dogs, called “dachshund sausages,” were sold by a German immigrant out of a food cart in New York in the 1860s, according to Culture Trip
